With ‘The search for talent’ as a theme, SLASSCOM HR Summit 2013; the 4th HR conference facilitated by SLASSCOM is scheduled for 10 October 2013 from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm at Cinnamon Grand Oak Room.

Proving that they are a force to be reckoned with, the IFS Quiz Team (IFS Ostrinus) emerged winners of the ‘IT Category’ and runners-up of the overall quiz at the recently concluded SLASSCOM Quizathon. This prestigious quiz, which was held at the Kingsbury Hotel on the 27th of September 2013, saw 30 teams spanning several sectors including IT, Business Process Management, Banking & Finance and Education, as well as several individual teams, competing to win this battle of minds.

IFS was well represented at the competition by two teams – IFS Ostrinus and IFS Albus. IFS Ostrinus outshone their rivals to win the “IT Category” while its second team IFS Albus was placed 3rd in the same category. In a highly intriguing competition IFS Ostrinus were neck and neck with the individual team of Mr. Vindana Ariyawansa– and were equally placed at the end of the competition, requiring a tie- breaking round to determine the winners of the overall category. After a tough fight in the tie-breaker IFS Ostrinus became runners-up in the overall quiz.

IFS Albus won the 3rd place of the IT Company category at SLASSCOM Quizathon.

Vice President and COO of IFS World Operations Sri Lanka Ranil Rajapakse said that he is very happy with the result and is proud of the achievements of IFS Ostrinus and IFS Albus. “At IFS we encourage our staff to utilize their creativity and talents, and their success at this competition shows that we are in the forefront on many playing fields in addition to Software Development. Enabling ‘Sri Lanka Tourism 2.0 and Beyond’ took place on 12th of September 2013 at Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo. This was organized by Sri Lanka Association of Software Services Companies (SLASSCOM) and The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) to boost the Sri Lankan tourism industry. Sri Lankan tourism is expanding quickly and this event looked into how companies providing software solutions, could help Sri Lanka to enhance the performance and the customer satisfaction in the tourism industry. Also this shed light into how to market Sri Lanka as a travel destination with minimum expenditure. This program will help the industry to apply innovative digital solutions to attract and retain tourists.

From about forty companies which participated in this competition, nine were shortlisted to deliver a short speech to introduce themselves to the Judge panel and go through some of the solutions and services they provide. The filtering process was conducted under three main criteria.

  • Effectiveness of solution.
  • Ease of development and adaptation in the local context..
  • Proven capabilities.

All nine company ambassadors sure did impress the panel of judges with their innovative ideas and series of applications alongside the services they provide.

Mr. Wijeya Rathnayake, President of AmCham delivered the welcome speech.  He also stated, “This could turn into a tourist exchange program”. Conference keynote was delivered by Mr. Simon March, Google Industry Specialist. As this was his 3rd visit to Sri Lanka, he was aware of the Sri Lankan tourism Industry expanding at a rapid rate. He was excited to see the audience being passionate about technology and interested in investing (knowledge and services) on Sri Lankan tourism.

Awards for the judges, panelists, participant companies and to the Keynote speaker were given away afterwards. With a networking session that enabled participants to meet and discuss, the event was declared closed.

The Kingsbury Hotel Colombo was buzzing with enthusiasm and anticipation on the evening of 27th Friday (September), as many corporate and individual quiz teams gathered to battle it out at the ‘Quizathon’ organized by SLASSCOM. This was the second edition of the annual quiz competition that acts as a testament of SLASSCOM’s objective of acting as a catalyst for growth of the Sri Lankan IT and BPO industry.

Forty teams in total took part in this year’s edition of Quizathon, which was immensely competitive and intense compared to previous year. Quiz teams representing IT companies, BPO/KPO companies, Schools and Educational Institutes, Finance and Banking sector were present. Individual teams and teams representing ‘Other’ category too had registered for the event. All the teams appeared to have done their home work and were prepared for a closely contested Quizathon.

The Quizathon consisted of five rounds and was hosted by Imran Furkan who himself is a prominent Quiz Master in the country and also the Executive Director of SLASSCOM. Every round consisted of ten questions that ranged from general knowledge to finance and accounting, from the exact age of papa Smurf to World politics. Every round produced a winning team, which had answered most questions correctly. In case there was tie, three more questions were presented as a tie breaker.

IFS – Ostrinus became the Runners up of SLASSCOM Quizathon 2013

After an intense competition that expanded for five rounds, the team led by Vindhana Ariyawansa emerged as the Overall Champions of Slasscom Quizathon 2013. IFS R and D International become the runners up and Nalaka De Silva’s team achieved the overall 3rd place. In addition to this, winners were selected from each team category after evaluating the aggregated scores after the five rounds.

Most of the contestants were keen on winning another award that was exclusively presented for the ‘Best Dressed Team’ during the Quizathon.  Here we saw a brilliant display of imagination and creativity from the teams and after what appeared to be a tough decision for the judges, Team ‘SoWrong’ who were dressed in sarongs was selected as the team that dressed best for the occasion.

At the end of the Quizathon, teams and the audience had the opportunity to network, to make new friends and share a word while enjoying the sumptuous dinner provided for the event. It was indeed a wonderful event that lasted throughout the Friday night and ended on a high.

Pramod Bhasin, Founder and Vice Chairman, Genpact and Chairman, the Skills Academy, India has joined the Advisory Board of the Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM).

Pramod founded Genpact – formerly GE Capital International Services, in 1997 and was the President & CEO of Genpact till June 2011 and is currently the Vice Chairman. He is considered the founder and pioneer of the Business Process Management industry in India. This industry now employs over a million people in India, directly and indirectly.

Pramod has also served as the Chairman of India’s National Association of Software & Services Companies (NASSCOM).

Under his leadership Genpact has also been the pioneer of this industry in China, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Genpact is acknowledged today as the leader in its industry and known for its Leadership development, Operating Excellence and Global scale, with over 55,000 employees across 17 countries and nearly $2b in revenues.

Prior to Genpact, Pramod was an officer of General Electric (GE). His career with GE spanned 25 years across the US, Europe and Asia. He subsequently became the head of GE Capital in India and Asia, having earlier worked with GE Capital’s Corporate Finance Group in Stamford,CT, USA. He moved to India from the US in 1994 to set up GE Capital from scratch. During this tenure he started joint ventures with HDFC in consumer finance, SBI for credit cards and Maruti for auto finance.

He has successfully started up many new businesses and pioneered breakthroughs in diverse industries. Pramod serves on the boards of NDTV, Bank of India and SRF Ltd, and on the governing boards of several educational institutions including IIM Lucknow, Lady Shri Ram College, and Shri Ram School.

Pramod is currently working to build “The Skills Academy”, a pioneering institute to enhance employability, especially for people in the unorganized sector. He is also focussed in promoting entrepreneurship and financial inclusion thru a variety of initiatives.

Pramod was voted IT Man of the Year by Dataquest in 2009. He and Genpact have received many awards for their pioneering efforts in building the industry, and for Genpact’s leadership position in India, China and Eastern Europe.

Commenting on his appointment to the Advisory Board of the SLASSCOM, Chairman of SLASSCOM Madu Ratnayake stated that “Pramod is a pioneer of the Outsourcing Industry and brings with him a wealth of experience. We are delighted to have his support and advice as we take Sri Lanka’s IT/BPO & Knowledge Services industry to the next phase of growth”.

The Sri Lanka Association of Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM), the IT and Knowledge  industry body which plays a catalyst role with aggressive plans to capitalize the opportunities for Sri Lanka, was recently admitted to membership of the prestigious  National Outsourcing Association (NOA) in the UK. The NOA celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2012. In those 25 years, the association has grown from a spark of an idea to being the pre-eminent promoter of outsourcing.

Commenting on the recent tie up Jeevan Gnanam-Head of SLASSCOM’s Marketing Forum stated” We are very happy to be engaging with NOA for UK strategy focus. Working with NOA in the last few years has helped Sri Lanka achieve its aggressive growth targets and we look forward to a continued fruitful relationship”.

Although outsourcing as an abstract concept is from time immemorial, the modern incarnation of outsourcing – with its IT-enabled influence on business processes has really come to the fore over the last 20 years. The NOA was a response to a growing need for both outsourcing customers and suppliers to share ideas, review successes and failures, and stop re-inventing wheels.
