The Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) recently organised the International Schools Software Competition in Colombo.
The CSSL which was established in 1976 has been playing a major role in promoting Information Technology and Professionalism among those engaged in the field of ICT in the country, for the past 36 years. The CSSL is also a member of the South Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC).
SEARCC annually organizes the International Schools Software Competition in one of the member countries and this year it was in Sri Lanka organised by CSSL.
The competition involves school children from across the Asian pacific region where they have to develop software as part of the competition. Their ability to do that during the competition is assessed by a panel of judges.
The winner of the competition was Republic of China (Taiwan) team. Australia came in the second place while Indian team won the third place. Sri Lanka Team A won the fourth place.
The competition was held at University of Colombo, School of Computing and the awards ceremony was held at Great Wall Restaurant, Colombo 03. CSSL past presidents and CSSL fellow members graced the occasion. CSSL President Mahesh Perera, CSSL Vice President Ajith Salgado and the CSSL Executive Council members also participated at the event.
hSenid Mobile, a multinational telco-mobile software solutions provider hosted a workshop in collaboration with the Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering Department, University of Moratuwa on Tuesday October 01, 2013.
The workshop titled ‘Future of the Connected World’ comprised sessions on present-day mobile trends, future predictions and the potential of the mobile industry, the various career opportunities available in the IT industry and a one-on-one session with representatives from hSenid Mobile. CEO Dinesh Saparamadu was the keynote speaker of the event. The Head of Department Dr. Ajith Pasqual and other faculty also attended the workshop.
The workshop included the various R&D opportunities available and hSenid Mobile’s role in implementing the ‘internet of things’.
The final address of the session, conducted by CEO Dinesh Saparamadu, focused on career guidance and the various career options available in the information technology industry.
“As an undergraduate and soon a graduate, I continuously urge you all to question if it is a job or a career that you seek. While a career is driven by passion, a job is your usual nine-to-five drill,” said the CEO.
The event held was a continuation to the series of programmes hSenid Mobile intends to implement at university level. Earlier this year the company held workshops at Moratuwa, Ruhuna and Wayamba Universities and at Jaffna University in 2012.

Bringing out the best of the breed, 99X Technology emerged as Joint
Mercantile Champions at the “IQA Wisdom Ultimate Quiz Challenge”, organized
by the International Quizzing Association (IQA) Sri Lanka.
This leading table quiz event in Sri Lanka was held on 14th September at
Kingsbury Colombo for the eighth consecutive year where teams comprising of
5 members battled right to the top. Exhibiting its popularity, this year’s
Wisdom Quiz was attended by over 40 teams representing various schools,
educational institutes, mercantile firms, banks and financial institutions,
and independent groups.
Ruwan Senanayake, Country Representative for Sri Lanka for IQA, stated ‘‘we
were the pioneers in introducing the audio visual based questions for table
quizzes and I as the compiler of questions always endeavor to meet the
standards set by the IQA. This is the only table quiz held according to IQA
rules and standards.’’
Commenting on this achievement Mr Mano Sekaram, CEO of 99X Technology
stated ‘‘we are delighted to have participated in the IQA Wisdom 2013 and
been judged as Joint Mercantile Champions. As thought leaders in the IT
industry, this goes on to showcase our talent beyond just delivering
software product engineering services globally.’’
Concluding a very tough competition and after a two-tie break, three teams
including 99X Technology remained on the top, joined by Dialog Team A and
IFS, whilst the overall winners were Chamara Sumanapala’s team. Other
winners included Royal College Team A and HNB Team A.
The members of 99X Technology comprised of Shirantha de Alwis (Associate
Tech Lead and Team Leader), Ivantha Senevirathne (Senior Software
Engineer), Rangitha Kuruppu (Trainee Software Engineer), Ravindu Madanayake
(Infrastructure Management Engineer) and Navaka Nawaratne
The quiz comprised of 50 questions in 10 questions per round based on 5
areas namely current affairs, sports, general knowledge, space & astronomy
& arts/literature and entertainment.
