hSenid Mobile, a multinational telco-mobile software solutions provider hosted a workshop in collaboration with the Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering Department, University of Moratuwa on Tuesday October 01, 2013.
The workshop titled ‘Future of the Connected World’ comprised sessions on present-day mobile trends, future predictions and the potential of the mobile industry, the various career opportunities available in the IT industry and a one-on-one session with representatives from hSenid Mobile. CEO Dinesh Saparamadu was the keynote speaker of the event. The Head of Department Dr. Ajith Pasqual and other faculty also attended the workshop.
The workshop included the various R&D opportunities available and hSenid Mobile’s role in implementing the ‘internet of things’.
The final address of the session, conducted by CEO Dinesh Saparamadu, focused on career guidance and the various career options available in the information technology industry.
“As an undergraduate and soon a graduate, I continuously urge you all to question if it is a job or a career that you seek. While a career is driven by passion, a job is your usual nine-to-five drill,” said the CEO.
The event held was a continuation to the series of programmes hSenid Mobile intends to implement at university level. Earlier this year the company held workshops at Moratuwa, Ruhuna and Wayamba Universities and at Jaffna University in 2012.

The Kingsbury Hotel Colombo was buzzing with enthusiasm and anticipation on the evening of 27th Friday (September), as many corporate and individual quiz teams gathered to battle it out at the ‘Quizathon’ organized by SLASSCOM. This was the second edition of the annual quiz competition that acts as a testament of SLASSCOM’s objective of acting as a catalyst for growth of the Sri Lankan IT and BPO industry.
Forty teams in total took part in this year’s edition of Quizathon, which was immensely competitive and intense compared to previous year. Quiz teams representing IT companies, BPO/KPO companies, Schools and Educational Institutes, Finance and Banking sector were present. Individual teams and teams representing ‘Other’ category too had registered for the event. All the teams appeared to have done their home work and were prepared for a closely contested Quizathon.
The Quizathon consisted of five rounds and was hosted by Imran Furkan who himself is a prominent Quiz Master in the country and also the Executive Director of SLASSCOM. Every round consisted of ten questions that ranged from general knowledge to finance and accounting, from the exact age of papa Smurf to World politics. Every round produced a winning team, which had answered most questions correctly. In case there was tie, three more questions were presented as a tie breaker.
After an intense competition that expanded for five rounds, the team led by Vindhana Ariyawansa emerged as the Overall Champions of Slasscom Quizathon 2013. IFS R and D International become the runners up and Nalaka De Silva’s team achieved the overall 3rd place. In addition to this, winners were selected from each team category after evaluating the aggregated scores after the five rounds.
Most of the contestants were keen on winning another award that was exclusively presented for the ‘Best Dressed Team’ during the Quizathon. Here we saw a brilliant display of imagination and creativity from the teams and after what appeared to be a tough decision for the judges, Team ‘SoWrong’ who were dressed in sarongs was selected as the team that dressed best for the occasion.
At the end of the Quizathon, teams and the audience had the opportunity to network, to make new friends and share a word while enjoying the sumptuous dinner provided for the event. It was indeed a wonderful event that lasted throughout the Friday night and ended on a high.

Colombo International Book Fair 2013, happening for the 15th consecutive year, is around the corner. Well, to be exact, the week-long event begins tomorrow (14th September 2013).
I can recall some of my experience at previous events where you visit the crowded BMICH complex and get the printed guide at the entrance to go through the confusing map to locate our favorite bookshop. And when you finally do so and go in search of the book you had planned to buy and end up disappointed. Looking at the crowd you then re-consider even checking out another bookshop. Luckily that won’t be the case this time around. The Colombo International Book Fair or CIBF as it is known, has got smarter with a smartphone guide, in the form of an Android app!
How Does It Work?
The all new Android app can be downloaded for free on Google Play. It works on any device running Android version 2.2 and above. At around 3.6 MB of size, this little app aims to function as a virtual guide throughout the event. You will require a working data connection to access certain sections of the app.
A simple UI welcomes you when you open the app. You get four different menu categories on the home-screen. The first option is “Books”. This is a very useful section that gives details about the books available at the fair. You can view the book cover, a small description about the book , price and the publisher or the bookshop where you can find the book at the fair. This section is still in the early stages of development so the content (number of books listed) is limited for now. But the creators of the app have informed that books and other content will be updated on a daily basis.
The second section titled “Stalls” is a database of all the participating bookshops and publishers. You can either browse through the list or do a quick search to find the bookshop you are looking for. Click on the name of a bookshop and you will be directed to the floor plan with the location of the bookshop marked and highlighted. It’s an extremely useful feature to locate bookshops in such a large venue.
The “Map” menu, as the name suggests, provides the detailed maps/plans of all the exhibition floors. The “Events” menu lists all the special events along with date and time, including book launches happening throughout the week at the venue.
The CIBF -2013 app is a need of the hour and it’s timely release will make it widely used during this year’s event. Future updates of the app are expected to add information on utility facilities available at the venue for the visitors including sanitary facilities and parking spaces. The upcoming updates will also concentrate on languages and maps and will add details of more books. This commendable effort will continue for the upcoming book fairs as well. Users can submit their feedback & suggestions about the app and the event by clicking the icon provided on the top right corner of the app.
The app is developed by Cinnamon Information Technologies (PVT) Ltd. Sri Lanka Book Publishers Association is the content partner while Digit Magazine is the online partner.
You can download this useful application for free on Google Play.
