Linux Distributions

A Linux distribution is a member of the family of Unix-like software distributions built on top of the Linux kernel.
Such distros (distributions) consist of a large collection of software applications. Word processors, spreadsheets, media players, database applications and many more applications may contain with those distributions.
Free to distribute by developing or changing the source may helpful to spread the distros highly. For Example Apple used UNIX based Operating system and the base kernel which they used is common. But the extended developments and other developments such as GUI system is developed by them and it their own property.
There are currently over six hundred Linux distributions. Over three hundred of those are in active development, constantly being revised and improved.
You can also create a Linux distribution if you want.

Today world’s leading super computers are running in Open SUSE Enterprise Edition.
I also used and going to be introduce to you about this great Operating System later.

Ubuntu based on the Debian Linux distribution. It is named after the South African ethical ideology Ubuntu ("humanity towards others") .
Ubuntu provides an up-to-date, stable operating system for the average user, with a strong focus on usability and ease-of-installation. They release a new version of Ubuntu within every six months period.
It is more popular than other operating systems.
Ubuntu is sponsored by the UK based company Canonical Ltd., owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth.They send free Ubuntu live CDs by requests of the Ubuntu enthusiastics all around the world.

Fedora is an RPM-based, general purpose operating system built on top of the Linux kernel, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat.
Fedora 11 is the stable version of Fedora (codenamed Leonidas) was released on June 9, 2009.
Fedora's motto "Fedora is about the rapid progress of Free and Open Source software."

Gentoo Linux is built on top of the Linux kernel and based on the Portage package management system.
Unlike a conventional software distribution, the user compiles the source code locally according to their chosen configuration. There are normally no precompiled binaries for software, continuing the tradition of the ports collection.
The development project and its products are named after the Gentoo penguin.
Gentoo describes itself as a meta distribution, "because of its near-unlimited adaptability".
Gentoo Linux was initially created by Daniel Robbins as the Enoch Linux distribution.
Gentoo also has minimal edition and it has not X windows system and it is text based.
Later I expect to tell how to install linux in text mode by using Gentoo minimal version.

It is based on Ubuntu, with integrated media codecs Mint also has design differences from Ubuntu.
- Mint has different and beautiful desktop environment than other Os’s. (A distinct user interface, including the custom Mint menu.)
Mainly Mint developed on KDE and XFCE desktop environment.

CentOS is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
It exists to provide a free enterprise class computing platform and strives to maintain 100% binary compatibility with its upstream distribution. CentOS stands for Community ENTerprise Operating System.
CentOS also good to practice Linux for beginners.

Debian 5.0 Lenie is the stable version of debian.
- The primary form, Debian GNU/Linux, which uses the Linux kernel and GNU OS tools, is a popular and influential Linux distribution.
It is distributed with access to repositories containing thousands of software packages ready for installation and use.
Debian can be used as a desktop as well as server operating system.
Current Stable Edition : Debian 5.0 “Lenny”

These distributions of Linux have more codecs for multimedia players and have beautiful desktop enhancement effects.
