Project Natal

by Uditha Bandara

Project Natal is a revolutionary way of playing games. This was announced at this year’s E3 conference. With the evolution of video games we had use keyboard, mouse or joystick for playing games. All of that relied on pressing buttons. But with the Nintendo Wii it changed in to a Motion controller, which was a new technology but still needed to use a controller in your hand.

Did you ever think of playing the games without any controller? Until the project Natal it wasn’t a reality. But with this invention, Microsoft was able to prove that we can play Next generation HD games with our real life experience.

And that was a Milestone for the whole game industry. Because now developer can make games that map real world 1:1 experience to a video game. You can also use your own item for the games. Earlier we had map editors in the game for customizing our games but now we can use our own items for customizing the game.

This technology is able to identify full-body 3D motion capture ,speech recognition and facial recognition. With the full body 3d motion capturing, gamer will able to move their game character with their body.

So it will map our body skeleton with the in game model bone skeleton in real time. And it is able to provide all our movement as a 3d animation in the game. What happens if somebody comes by when you playing the game? Natal will block those, other than the gaming avatar to its game environments.

They also demo few playable game s at the E3.Which played by different type of celebrities like

Dress Up - Players are able to shop and try on clothes in 3D.

Monster- An animated game in which the player is a monster and achieves points by destroying and damaging virtual buildings and other virtual objects in a city setting. When the player makes a roaring-like noise, the monster too will roar and a jet of light comes out of the monster's mouth.

Legendary Movie director Steven Spielberg was also supporting to this project with his experience.

This is a pivotal moment that will carry with it a wave of change, the ripples of which will reach far beyond video games" -Steven Spielberg

And this will be going to launch later 2010. Exact time frame is still not confirmed. This will be releasing as a different hardware component with can be used with the existing XBOX 360 consoles.

So all the Millions of the XBOX360 gamers can use this gaming experience for their consoles without buying a new one.
